How this works

  • Presumptive scheme (Section 58, formerly 44ADA): 50% of gross receipts is treated as profit, with no detailed books needed. Open to resident individuals in specified professions (IT and software, engineering, design, consulting, legal, medical, accountancy and similar) with receipts up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹75 lakh if cash is no more than 5% of receipts.
  • Full books: tax on actual profit. A tax audit by a CA is compulsory if receipts are above ₹50 lakh, or if you declare profit below 50% of receipts with income above the basic exemption limit. Between ₹50 lakh and ₹75 lakh, the presumptive scheme (with 95%+ digital receipts) avoids that audit.
  • New regime: 0 / 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30% with breaks at ₹4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 lakh. Income up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free through the rebate, with marginal relief above it.
  • Old regime: 0 / 5 / 20 / 30% with breaks at ₹2.5, 5 and 10 lakh, a rebate up to ₹5 lakh, and deductions allowed.
  • 4% cess applies in every case; surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh income. Advance tax is due only if the balance after TDS is ₹10,000 or more.

An estimate for resident individuals under 60, using rates confirmed in Budget 2026. It doesn't cover salary, capital gains or interest on late advance tax. Check your final return with a CA.
